Chazz Miller
Urban Artist Extraordinaire
Charles (Chazz) Miller is an interesting man. In fact, that is truly an understatement. Chazz is a fascinating person by any standard. An extraordinary artist and native Detroiter, he is committed to his art and to his hometown. Chazz is the founder of Detroit’s Artist Village; located on the city’s west side, as well as, founder and executive director of Public Art Workz (PAWZ).
The mission of P.A.W.Z. is “to create bold, innovative community redevelopment projects that use the arts, culture, creativity and innovation, as a catalyst for reinventing and revitalizing the communities of Old Redford and Northwest Detroit, Michigan, into a multi discipline, arts, education, entertainment and cultural community.”
During the summer of 2009, Chazz met Al Taylor from The Peace Project. A kinship was formed and the two collaborated to expand their shared visions in an effort to positively impact Detroit. Chazz’s dynamic butterfly mural is the foundation for the restoration of the historic Gordon Park; also on the city’s west side. The mural inspires a concept of rebirth and can be seen at the exact location where the 1967 civil disturbance tore apart the Motor City. For years, since that dreadful event, Detroit has struggled with economic decline, high unemployment, disinvestment, high crime, polarization, neglect, abuse, the lack of vision and a host of other maladies. Nonetheless, Chazz continues his work, undeterred. Today, he is intent on using the arts to transform his beloved Detroit into a world class city using the city’s sites as the canvas for a new beginning.
